Egypt is a land is full of mystery and wonder. From the ancient pyramids to the wonder that is the sphinx many people see Egypt as magical and mysterious. It should come as no surprise then that there are a few strange artefacts and anomalies to be found in Egypt, things that we are surprised to find and things that are just plain weird. While not strictly technological, a German forensic scientist, Dr. Svetla Balabanova of the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Ulm tested the ancient Egyptian mummified remains of Henut-Tawy, Lady of the Two Lands. She was surprised to find evidence of nicotine and, even more bizarrely, cocaine. At the time, Henut-Tawy was alive, cocaine was only grown in the Andes and certainly no evidence of Egyptians growing it has ever come to light. Established archaeological theory says that no contact was made between the Egyptians and the Incas so where did this cocaine come from? In the great pyramid of Giza, there is another strange anomaly. In 1837, an archaeologist by the name of J.R. Hill was blasting the mouth of the southern shaft for access. After all was done he found a flat iron plate about 26 cm (10.2″) long, 8.6 cm (3.4″) wide, with a thickness ranging from .4 cm (.2″) to nearly zero. It was given a date of about 2500BC based on the times when the great pyramid was built, but iron wasn’t used in Egypt until about 1300BC and in Europe it was even later at 1100BC. So where did this iron plate come from? One of the strangest mysteries is how the ancient Egyptians knew about the power of flight. In 1898, the tomb of Pa-di-Imen in Saqqara was excavated. It was during this excavation that a bird type figure was unearthed. Weighing just 40 grams with a wing span of over 7 inches, there are definite reasons why some scientists think this may be in fact a figure of a glider. For a start, its tail is more aeroplane than bird, and the figure itself resembles no known bird today. Another strange thing is its wings, which are slightly curved downwards and today are known as reversedihedral wings, a type of wing which was used on Concorde. Along with these finds are numbers of strange carvings showing things that are completely out of their time. In the city complex of Abydos, there are carvings of what can only be described as futuristic vehicles including something that looks suspiciously similar to a helicopter. Then at Dendera, there is a carving that has sparked a whole controversy because it shows what looks like a lamp. While this would normally be laughed off as coincidence the find of a battery in ancient Baghdad makes this just a little too close to possible for some people. There are lots of strange finds that conventional archaeology cannot explain. Egypt has just a small number of them and most of the ones that are found are only discussed in fringe settings making it difficult to get to the truth. However, with a little perseverance, you can find some truly weird and mind boggling archaeological finds.
